The Magician and Saboteur are archetypes that are often discussed in the context of personal development:

THE MAGICIAN

An archetype that is often found in fantasy, science fiction, and historical stories. The magician's quest is to change or transform someone or something, and they may have access to secret knowledge. The magician may have significant power and may be feared, but they may also fear themselves and their potential to cause harm. Some examples of characters that fit the magician archetype include Gandalf the Grey, Morpheus, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Doctor Strange, Loki, and John Hammond.

THE SABOTEUR

An archetype that is formed out of fear and can cause people to run away from opportunities. For example, if someone has had a messy divorce and then someone new comes into their life, they may find themselves not responding to the new person.

Caroline Myss recommends looking for spiritual resonance in archetypes, and asking questions such as:

What impact has this archetype had on my spirituality?

What have I learned about my own shadow aspect through this archetype?

Has it caused me to block or forgo change that needs to happen?

What immediate guidance might this archetype have to offer me in the present moment?
